  • Distilled water extracts minerals from any surface it comes in contact with – thus, if you store it in a plastic container, it might absorb a minor amount of plastic. Similarly, if you keep it in a steel-based container, it might absorb trace amounts of certain materials from it, which can adversely affect your health.

Alkaline Water – What is it exactly?

As you can tell from the name, “Alkaline,” it refers to the pH level of water. We’ve all studied chemistry at some point in our academic life, and this is where you’ll need chemistry to understand what alkaline water is. The pH level determines how acidic or alkaline a liquid is.

The water that you drink has a pH level of 7, which is neither acidic nor alkaline. Alkaline water usually has a pH of 8 or 9. Alkaline water can either be in the form of spring water (naturally alkaline) or processed to make it alkaline.

To make water alkaline, it has to go through a process referred to as electrolysis. It is the process of passing an electric current through water, which then separates acidic and alkaline ions. The acidic ions are then separated – thus resulting in alkaline water.

Alkaline water is filtered with the primary aim of increasing its pH level, thus making it alkaline. Moreover, it also involves the process of adding minerals rather than extracting it, as done in other types of water filtration systems.

Cons of Drinking Alkaline Water

  • The biggest and most significant downside of drinking alkaline water is that it reduces the stomach’s natural acidity. Due to the lowered acidity, it becomes challenging for the stomach to fight against bacteria and other pathogens.
  • In the long run, drinking alkaline water could lead to metabolic alkalosis –  resulting in nausea, confusion, muscle twitching, and vomiting.
  • As a result of the metabolic alkalosis, it can also reduce the amount of free calcium in your body, which adversely affects bone health.
