The condensed water is free from any harmful contaminants and/or mineral residue – this resulting condensed liquid is referred to as distilled water.

  • If you’re planning on using distilled water immediately or within a day or two, it can be safely stored. However, in terms of storing it for longer durations, it could be a problem.
  • Distilled water extracts minerals from any surface it comes in contact with – thus, if you store it in a plastic container, it might absorb a minor amount of plastic. Similarly, if you keep it in a steel-based container, it might absorb trace amounts of certain materials from it, which can adversely affect your health.

Alkaline Water – What is it exactly?

As you can tell from the name, “Alkaline,” it refers to the pH level of water. We’ve all studied chemistry at some point in our academic life, and this is where you’ll need chemistry to understand what alkaline water is. The pH level determines how acidic or alkaline a liquid is.

The water that you drink has a pH level of 7, which is neither acidic nor alkaline. Alkaline water usually has a pH of 8 or 9. Alkaline water can either be in the form of spring water (naturally alkaline) or processed to make it alkaline.

To make water alkaline, it has to go through a process referred to as electrolysis. It is the process of passing an electric current through water, which then separates acidic and alkaline ions. The acidic ions are then separated – thus resulting in alkaline water.

Alkaline water is filtered with the primary aim of increasing its pH level, thus making it alkaline. Moreover, it also involves the process of adding minerals rather than extracting it, as done in other types of water filtration systems.

Although there is ongoing research on whether alkaline water is beneficial or not, some studies have shown positive effects of drinking alkaline water. For instance, a study found that drinking alkaline water with a pH of 8.8 might help deactivate the primary enzyme pepsin, which causes acid reflux.

Moreover, another study suggested that drinking alkaline water might have a positive influence on people with high blood sugar, high blood pressure, and cholesterol.

The primary reason behind choosing alkaline water over normal water is that people are of the view that it neutralizes the acids in the human body. However, to get the most out of alkaline water, it needs to have minerals and a negative ORP (Oxidation Reduction Potential) as well. Due to the presence of an ORP, it allows the water to act as an antioxidant.

While research is still being conducted on alkaline water, here are some of the proposed pros of drinking alkaline water.

  • Drinking alkaline water contains anti-aging properties – which is what has attracted more people towards it.
  • Not only does it have anti-aging properties, but it also has colon-cleansing properties and supports the immune system –thus making it stronger against diseases, specifically against cancer.
  • It also includes other health benefits, such as improved skin health, hydration, and weight loss.

Cons of Drinking Alkaline Water

  • The biggest and most significant downside of drinking alkaline water is that it reduces the stomach’s natural acidity. Due to the lowered acidity, it becomes challenging for the stomach to fight against bacteria and other pathogens.
  • In the long run, drinking alkaline water could lead to metabolic alkalosis –  resulting in nausea, confusion, muscle twitching, and vomiting.
  • As a result of the metabolic alkalosis, it can also reduce the amount of free calcium in your body, which adversely affects bone health.
